workshops

;In VOCALiSM workshops, participants are encouraged to use their voice in a safe, creative space.

We give you tools to advocate most effectively for yourself and others with a technical and creative approach to group participation. In particular, we use music as a way to reach people.

VOCALiSM helps people to overcome 'stage fright' and allows people, in a very simple and creative way, to build self-confidence and to present themselves in the most authentic way.

VOCALiSM

PITCHING & PRESENTING

Picture
What is the secret to communication? Many of us are petrified of public speaking, too scared to talking to strangers, frightened of humiliation.

The voice is a powerful tool. A strong performance will enrapture an audience. The voice can captivate a room of strangers. So what makes a good performance?

VOCALiSM focuses on imparting this knowledge in a creative way. Participants are given a space to develop their own advocacy skills by incorporating vocal techniques, breathing exercises and performance tips.

Pitching and presentation workshops will focus on:
  1. breathing technique, vocal exercises & singing
  2. public presentation and performance skills
  3. self-confidence & commanding the room

Workshops can be tailored for schoolchildren, teachers, civil society professionals, students, human rights defenders, community groups, and private businesses.

ADVOCACY & STORYTELLING

Picture
Everyone will learn techniques that they can use when advocating in public. There are two elements to this workshop: TECHNIQUE and COMMUNICATION.

In the technical part, we examine three aspects of vocal production:
  1. Stance
  2. Breath
  3. Energy

When considering how we communicate, participants explore three concepts:
  1. CONTENT - what is your message?
  2. CONTEXT - who is your audience?
  3. CONVICTION - why are you advocating this?
,
Each participant will get the chance to write a paragraph about an issue they care about (rights-based, personal, etc.) or about an inspirational person or idea. As many participants as possible, time-permitting, will get the opportunity to present their story; either to a partner or to the group. By the end of the workshop, every participant will have learned skills to help them become a better advocate.

SONGWRITING AS ADvocacy

Picture
Our Songwriting as Advocacy workshop allows you the space to say something important in a new way.

The
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an  advocate as:

1. one that pleads the cause of another; specifically: one that pleads the cause of another before a tribunal or judicial court
2. one that defends or maintains a cause or proposal
3. one that supports or promotes the interests of another

Here's the result of one of our songwriting workshops:
"Empty Chair" by Front Line Defenders.

We believe that advocacy skills allow us to speak up for ourselves and for others. Songwriting is a highly creative and expressive way to communicate, with many benefits. Read our testimonials here.
